1) Check Your Landscape Grading
The slope of your land going away from your home is critical to keeping water away from your basement. Your yard should slope downward at least 6” in the 10’ of soil from your house. 10 feet is enough of a distance to ensure water is carried away from your house.
2) Clean or Repair Gutters
Making sure your gutters are clear of debris is one really easy way to extend the life of your home’s foundation. If you have seamed gutters, you’ll want to make sure they aren’t leaking. Leaking gutters and full gutters can allow water to flow and cause a lot of damage to your home’s foundation. Make sure to clean your gutters regularly to prevent major damage to your basement foundation.
3) Downspout Extenders
Your downspout should direct rain and rain runoff away from your house. But it’s important to direct the water 5 to 10 feet away from your house.
4) Plant Roots
Trees and shrubs will affect the way water is absorbed. During droughts your soil will dry out unevenly, affecting your foundation. This can cause all sorts of foundation problems.
